The residential sector’s share in India’s electricity demand is steadily rising. Yet, homebuyers do not receive clear and credible information on the long-term performance of buildings. To help address this gap, Prayas (Energy Group) and Pune International Centre (PIC) hosted the first roundtable in a planned series on the need for transparent sustainability disclosures in buildings.

The session brought together green building consultants and experts to discuss opportunities and challenges in introducing such disclosures. Participants noted that while developer mandates exist, consumers still need reliable and comparable information to build trust and drive demand for energy-efficient homes. With India’s housing stock expanding rapidly, the need for simple, standardised and trustworthy disclosures is increasingly urgent.

Experts also shared useful suggestions on the type and level of parameters that could be included, ensuring that disclosures remain accessible and consumer-friendly. The discussion has helped in developing a uniform disclosure framework that can empower homebuyers and support a more sustainable housing ecosystem. The details will be published soon.
