Agriculture being one of the integral sectors of the Indian economy, electricity supply to agriculture and allied activities hold crucial position in the power sector of most states. Like many states, Maharashtra, faces many challenges with respect to quality of supply to agriculture, estimation of agricultural energy consumption, uneven energy usage in agriculture across state and metering-billing-revenue recovery of agricultural consumption. This Marathi article in ‘Maharashtra Rajya Kisan Sabha- 30th session- Souvenir’ presents an overview of the emergence of these problems during the past three decades and also discusses the probable solutions to tackle them. The article highlights two of the crucial policies implemented in the state- ‘Solarization of agricultural feeders’ and ‘Feeder based metering’ as strong solutions to break free from the vicious cycle of poor agricultural supply.
