"India Energy Security Scenarios 2047" is an online tool available at www.indiaenergy.gov.in developed by the Planning Commission, GoI. The goal of this tool is to encourage more informed & objective discussions on the future energy choices and kick start serious debates on the implications of these choices (seen as a whole) on energy security, resource use (land, water etc), country’s finances and local and global environmental issues. With all assumption and constraints transparently available, the tool allows users to create their own energy future pathways by choosing a combination of supply and demand trajectories lying within a broad spectrum ranging from a highly pessimistic "least effort" scenario to a very optimistic "heroic effort" scenario, and understand the implications of the chosen trajectory on energy imports, land requirements, CO2 emissions etc. The tool is intended to be a discourse-building platform.
Prayas (Energy Group) was invited to become a core knowledge partner in developing this tool from its conceptualization in June 2013. As part of this effort, we have helped to structure the tool and also contributed to developing scenarios for many supply and demand sectors, namely solar PV, CSP, rooftop and water-heating; onshore and offshore wind; small hydro; coal and gas based power generation; coal production; and household energy consumption for electrical appliances and cooking. PEG’s efforts have been acknowledged and appreciated by the Planning Commission.
The first version of the tool was launched on February 28, 2014 while the second version with enhanced features and sectors is expected to be launched during the first half of 2015.
